Curriculum- Performing Arts

At Blackburn Lake Primary School music is an integral part of the curriculum. Each class has one music session per week.

In music students:

  • Explore beat, rhythm, pitch, tempo, tone texture and colour
  • Develop an understanding of music
  • Explore a range of percussion instruments throughout the year
  • Develop their aural skills
  • Participate in playing, singing and movement
  • Year 3 & 4 students are taught recorder and Year 5 & 6 students are taught ukuele over two years as part of the classroom music program
  • Compose, perform and respond to their own and others’ performances through traditional and technological methods

At BLPS we offer an extensive instrumental music lesson program for Foundation to Year 6 students with half of our student population learning a musical instrument. Expert tuition is available on a wide range of instruments including strings, percussion, woodwind, piano and voice.

Students who learn a musical instrument within the school or outside are encouraged to join one of the ensembles that are available at BLPS. These include:

  • String Ensemble
  • Concert Band
  • Marimba Ensemble
  • Choir

These groups perform regularly at Assembly, Education Evenings, School Celebrations, Community Events and local Senior Citizen Afternoons and at other venues by invitation.

Bi-annually students are involved in a whole school production providing the opportunity for all students to experience drama and musical theatre. Students from Year 5 & 6 are encouraged to audition for the lead roles.
