Italian Language Program
The central goal of the Italian Language Program is twofold – to
foster an appreciation of another culture as well as our own; and to
promote and develop language as communication.
The program aims
concurrently to establish an awareness of language and the
development of language skills.
It does this firstly by
introducing students to the festivals, food, dress, family, school,
sport, leisure activities, stories, fairy tales, history, art, dance
and music of Italy.
Knowledge of Italian culture is then compared and contrasted
to our Australian culture.
Students learn
that the central goal of learning a language is communication.
An awareness of this, and development of skills, is taught by
listening, speaking, reading, writing, singing and performing.
Many of the
activities covered during the school year will not only enrich
students’ knowledge of cultures, but also aim to foster
independence, cooperation, and collaboration; and encourage risk taking in language use.
The Italian activities
are also designed to be integrated with other curriculum areas with
emphasis on participation and enjoyment.
